Common Ground Projects

Bernardin Conferences

Bernardin Conferences have enabled the Catholic Common Ground Initiative to continue the tradition of meaningful dialogue between Catholics. Past Bernardin Conferences have been convened for the discussion of topics such as sexuality, culture, and the Catholic tradition; the migration of peoples and immigration policy; and religion, law, and politics.

Philip J. Murnion Lectures

Named for the late Msgr. Philip J. Murnion, the charismatic leader who enabled the Catholic Common Ground Initiative to grow and expand, the Murnion Lecture series has provided distinguished speakers the opportunity to share insights and reflections on how to find common ground. In addition to the featured lecture, a response is given by another individual offering a different view, creating the opportunity for the full examination and discussion of a concept from multiple perspectives.
Past lecturers, including Most Rev. Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B., NBC’s Brian Williams, author Jill Ker Conway, and an original member of the Initiative steering committee, have spoken on such topics as how American Catholics think about the Church, international Catholic dialogue, and dealing with diversity in the post-Vatican II Church.

In addition to the lecture and response, the Annual Cardinal Bernardin Award has been given to outstanding Church leaders.
